Cyclist attacks motorist

Driver cuts of cyclist in traffic. Words are exchanged. Cyclist opens passenger door of pickup truck and pulls passenger from truck, attacking him in the process. Cyclist arrested. Read the details here.

Cyclelicious understands the cyclist's reaction but does not recommend this method of cyclist advocacy. If a motorist ticks you off, realize he's probably just stupid instead of purposefully antagonistic. Take a chill pill, relax, and remember that you're having way more fun than the driver is.

If that doesn't work, you can always read the adventures of Spike Bike and fantasize.

Florida bike commuters paid 20 cents per mile

The private Palm Beach Day School of Palm Beach, Florida pays its faculty and staff 20 cents for every mile they bike to work. The school encourages alternative commute modes to alleviate parking problems in the neighborhood around the school.

New Belgium response

Last week I griped about a New Belgium delivery truck driver. New Belgium's response is below.

In the past I've written letters to Western Disposal in Boulder and Yellow Roadway about their dangerous driving. I've never heard back from them, although the Yellow driver was reported to the police. Kudos to New Belgium for paying attention.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I had a conversation with our distributor in Denver who owns and operates the truck in question and they will bring it up at their next driver meeting. As a fellow cyclist it drives me nuts when I see this happen or hear of it happening. Driver safety is very important to New Belgium. Thanks again for bringing this up.

Arena is a bike touring artist who participated in the 2005 Burning Man festival. Arena, who loves to draw bicycles, spent the day on the playa with her art supplies and used this human canvas. Bikes are basically the only way to get around Black Rock City during Burning Man.

Read more about Arena and her experience at Burning Man, her bike touring adventures and her outstanding collection of sketches at her blog, everything Venus.

Asbestos bike brake pads recalled

Bridgestone Cycle (a Saitama subsidiary of the Japanese tire company) sold bikes in Japan with asbestos in the brake pads. About 19,500 children's bikes with the asbestos brakes were imported from China and sold in Japan. Bridgestone is offering free replacement of the brakes.

Incredibly, asbestos is still widely used in developing nations such as India, Brazil, and China and use of asbestos is actually increasing at an annual rate of about seven percent.

In the United States, asbestos has been banned for most uses since 1989.

Jimmy does drugs

Earlier I reported that Ken Kifer's killer, Jimmy Don Rodgers, was scheduled to be released from prison on September 12. According to Riin Gill, Rodgers was scheduled for release this month but he was found with marijuana while in prison and he failed a blood test and, hence, is not eligible for parole. Another parole hearing will take place in October.
