Woodside & Portola Valley enforcement action

A quick word to cyclists riding around Alpine & Portola Road around Woodside -- San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies are citing cyclists for riding to the left of the shoulder. Deputies will be out in force on Wednesday and Saturdays on the roads around Woodside for the next three weeks.

Although cycling to the left of the shoulder line is legal in California, the deputies are writing tickets to cyclists they see riding outside of the shoulder, even when no other traffic is present.

Local cyclist Dan Connelly was ticketed on Portola Valley Road and had his ticket overturned [PDF] in court.

Berlin has NOT banned fixies

Everybody has been all a twitter this week about Berlin's "fixie ban." Even Freakanomics picked up on this story with a sensational headline.

German bike blogs like Rad Spannerei have reported that police in several major cities have been cracking down on brakeless fixies all over Germany, including in Berlin, as police have started to notice brakeless fixies in larger numbers, and the Polizei are tasked with maintaining Germany's reputation as a law and order society.

The "ban" on brakeless bikes in Germany is not new, although the crackdown is relatively recent -- I think it probably began about a year ago? Bikes in Germany must be equipped with brakes; although coaster brakes are common in Europe, the German police apparently don't agree with the claim that you stop the bike by backpedaling is the same as a coaster brake.

San Jose Sartorial

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition will publish some new brochures and asked me to send them some photos of cyclists riding around the South Bay. I saw Reese last night in San Jose looking good in her gray skirt and black top.

I only had about 5 minutes until my bus so I had to make do with shooting into the sun as she rode down San Fernando Street. I stopped up and hoped for the best; unfortunately, my dirty lens means this photo probably isn't brochure worthy, but it's good enough for a bicycle blog :-)

82 year old's stolen bike recovered

When Heidi Yeglic got the call that someone had found her stolen bike, she almost cried.

It’s exactly what the Penticton senior did while offering a few words of thanks to the man who spotted her bike that had been missing since a thief stole it from the doorsteps of her friend’s house last month.

“I was so happy,” she said choking back tears of joy. “I mean that is my bike, my life. He is so kind to have realized that was my bike and to go back and get it.”

Happy Canada Day

To my Canadian friends a Happy Canada Day to you. When the Tour de France begins this weekend, I believe Ryder Hesjedal of Team Garmin Slipstream will be the only Canadian at this race. This will be his second time racing the Tour de France.

Canada’s National Vehicle Recycling Program announced a new initiative this week that gives participants up to $490 off the purchase of a new, high-end commuter bicycle through a national partnership with the Bicycle Trade Association of Canada. Read more at BR&IN. Canada Retire Your Ride website.
