Which reminds me: I need to change the chain on my road bike. I have 1500 miles on my current chain (10 speed) and it's already stretched. At $50 a pop, those 10 speed chains are not cheap.

Who are you, Thor Hushvod? :)
I would not consider changing a chain before 10,000 miles. On my main bike I still run the OEM chain, and it has more than that. My commuter bike has been running the same chain since 1995. And yes, I clean them and wax them as needed.
It's a 10 speed chain (105 group) and it's already stretched. Shifting has become uneven.
My commuter bikes with fat chains -- yeah, I don't know how many thousands of miles are on those, but this is on the finicky road bike. The lifespan of the chain is disappointing.
Makes me love my Rohloff and 8 speed chain even more :)
...the good news is: we've made our new 10 speed chains lighter, thinner & faster shifting...
...oh ya, btw, they now cost a lot more & don't last nearly as long...
...the ultimate in exponentially planned obsolescence...
