Bicycle accident insurance scam

This came from a recap of weird news for 2005. See if you can follow along. Hans (not his real name) bought some sort of accident insurance. A few months later, Hans was riding his bicycle when he fell, rolled down an embankment and onto railroad tracks just as a train passed by. He lost a thumb and a couple of fingers when the train rolled over his hands.

Investigators believe, however, that Hans cut off his own fingers to collect on the insurance. No mention was made whether Hans wears a helmet while cycling or not. Read the story here.
